Using because, that, if and when

The words because and that are used in a sentence to explain.

e.g. We came indoors because it started to rain. I didn't know that it would rain.

 

Task 1:

Can you complete these sentences so that they make sense?

1. Nicky did not know that ...........................

2. William went for a ride on his bike because ...................

3. Emma made dinner because ..........................

4. The dog fetched the ball that .....................

 

Task 2:

Read the sentences and decide which ones are missing the word because or that

5. Tony turned the lights on ....................... it was getting dark.

6. Everybody  liked the presents ................ they got for Christmas.

7. I got into trouble ....................... I broke the window with my football.

8. Lizzie likes the carrots ................ her mum picks from the garden.

 

The words if and when are used when the second part of the sentence depends on the first part.

e.g. You can have an ice cream if you finish your vegetables.

      You can watch TV when you finish your homework.

 

Task 3:

Can you match two halves of a sentence and add if or when to join them?
