Half term holiday homework

This week the children have brought home a new set of phonic words to practise reading.  Remind children to use sound buttons  to help them to sound out the words.

The children could cut out the words and sort them into real words and alien words.

Mini scarecrows

Our creative project for this holiday is to make a mini scarecrow. The children have been busy planting different flowers and vegetables in our garden and they will soon begin to grow.

Now we need some scarecrows to keep the birds away and protect the plants.

The design is as broad as your child’s imagination. You could use wooden spoons or small canes as a basis for your scarecrow.

Please write your child’s name on their scarecrow as we will be putting them in our garden.

Summer drawing competition

On Friday  14th June we will be taking the children to Chaplin Lodge to sing to the residents again. We would like to give them some pictures showing them what summer means to the children. The children have been given a piece of paper to use to draw their pictures / make a poster. The winning pictures will be given to the residents as our present to them.

Phonics Homework

To prepare and support your child at home with the Phonics Screening Test, we have prepared sets of words for the children to practise each week.

There are 2 sets one with sound buttons and one without. Please practise without sound buttons so children can put in the sound buttons. If they find this difficult then practise with sound buttons to recap and then try again without sound buttons.

Remind children to use sound buttons when sounding out words

The children have also brought home sound mats  to remind them of the sounds.

Please look at last weeks homework for more information and ideas for games.

Phonics Homework

To prepare and support your child at home with the Phonics Screening Test, we have prepared sets of words for the children to practise each week.

Remind children to use sound buttons

Additionally you could play a few simple, quick games to help your child with this test.

  • Start with a simple word that they can spell, such as "mop", then change or add letters to make nonsense words like "vop", "blop" or "mol". Ask them to write the words so they're thinking about the letter sounds and seeing how the word looks.
  • Make up a story about the word – what kind of creature is a vop? Does it make a blop sound?
  • Write nonsense words and real words on post it notes, stick these on your fridge. During breakfast/ dinner time your child can read the word and either put them in the bin if they are nonsense words or keep them on the fridge if they are real words.
  • Whilst food shopping or on family outings you could make up silly words ‘poad’ for ‘road’ or ‘nar’ for ‘car.’ The child will find this very funny, although ensure children are aware of the real word towards the end of the game.

Websites

This website has great games which help with real words and pseudo words: www.phonicsplay.co.uk

Easter Holiday Creative Homework    Our theme for next term is Plant Power.

Take a look at the ideas below and choose one or more to complete:

  • Compose words for a song about plants/ flowers / trees. Words can be set to a familiar tune or you could compose a tune of your own. Can you perform your song and record? Produce a song sheet with the words of your song. Bring into school or email to the school office marked ‘homework class 1’. You could add actions/ dance moves to your song too.
  • Create your own box/container garden.

e.g.

  • Make 3D models of flowers/trees.
  • Create a poster with pictures and descriptions of the different plants that you have found in your garden or local park/wood. (Maybe it could be a lift the flap designed poster where your picture is on the flap and when you open the flap there is the name of the plant and a description of it underneath).
  • Pressed flowers with the name and details of the plant that the flower has come from.
  • Can you invent a board game based around our theme. e.g. playing pieces/ cards could be plant pots/flowers/trees. Maybe you could collect different parts of a flower during the game and the winner is the first person to collect a complete flower or Plant Bingo!

This homework is due back to school on  Tuesday 23rd April.

I hope you have fun with this creative homework and that you have an enjoyable holiday.

This is a handwriting task so the children will be expected to write using the cursive style. The picture shows  how to form each letter of the alphabet and hold the pencil correctly. The children have some lined paper.

Please help your child to write slowly and carefully to ensure each letter is correctly formed, there are finger spaces between the words and the writing sits on the line.

The children can copy sentences about their favourite animal or make up their own.

They could even carry out some research to find some facts they did not know.

The children have been on a hunt around the school for symbols and we have looked at some of the symbols that are familiar to them in class today. For homework can the children go on a symbol hunt around the home and maybe on their journey to school, or a visit somewhere. Then draw the symbols they see in the grid and say what they mean.

The children decided on some  extra homework  to find out the difference between

a tortoise and a turtle

and

an alligator and a crocodile.
