Online Safety

       https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/8_10/

As part of our focus on Online Safety, we want to be able to support parents and carers by providing relevant/up to date information.

Allowing children to use any apps online can come with risks. We often have to support children when they have been exposed to harm online, are upset or bullied online, or see inappropriate content. In our experience, TikTok and WhatsApp are two of the most common apps used by children where this can take place and both are not eligible to be used by primary school aged children.

The following information comes from Social media guides - UK Safer Internet Centre

TikTok

Age requirements13 years +

To sign up for TikTok, you must verify that your age is over 13.

WhatsApp

Age requirements16 years +

To be eligible to sign up for this service, you must be at least 16 years of age.

We understand the pressures parents are under to allow their children to use age inappropriate apps.

We will support you at home by teaching the children in school to consider:

  • Privacy settings and age relevance

  • Talking to them about the content they share

  • Discussing the consequences of sharing messages and image

  • Developing positive online behaviours and habits

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about keeping your child safe online.

My dad died twice. Once when he was thirty-nine and again four years later, when he was twelve. On his twelfth birthday, Al Chaudhury receives a letter from his dead father. It directs him to the bunker of their old house, where Al finds a time machine (an ancient computer and a tin bucket). The letter also outlines a mission: travel back to 1984 and prevent the go-kart accident that will eventually take his father’s life. But as Al soon discovers, whizzing back thirty years requires not only imagination and courage, but also lying to your mom, stealing a moped, and setting your school on fire—oh, and keeping your pet hamster safe.

Reading Expectation

Your child should spend short periods of time (10-15 minutes) each day reading, talking about their reading or listening to an adult read. Please use your child’s reading record tree to indicate when they have read. Children in Year 5 & 6 will be expected to record their reads independently. Teachers will also be reading with your child on a regular basis and will write in the reading record tree when they have done so, to ensure a good communication method between us all. We ask that children read at least 4 times a week at home. Reading record trees and returned homework will be checked on a Thursday each week. Children can change their books daily. Children who complete their homework will receive Dojos as a reward for bringing it back into school.
